You join a motivated, professional and creative academic team when you work at our school. Over your first two months you will complete your Induction, guided by a Peer Advisor (mentor), overseen by your Senior Teacher and myself. Over the first two months you will gradually be given classes to observe, and then take over.
We mainly use the CELTA standard lesson plan so that teachers have knowledge and use terminology that is relevant to the wider EFL industry. Our classes are student-centered and focus on developing all four macro skills and associated micro skills. We incorporate the direct method, the communicative approach; task based learning, the lexical approach as well as other methodological approaches relevant to our students’ needs.
Our classes involve high student to student interaction, relatively low teacher talk time and ensure that students are provided with exposure to language in engaging ways, study patterns and form and then have lots of practice activating or producing language in real and meaningful ways. We want to motivate our students, focus on the things they do well and positively reinforce their language experimentation. Our classes mimic aspects of the way that children acquired their first language so we do not use Chinese in class. We run workshops every week on subjects including phonology, developing literacy in second language learners, motivation, learner types, differentiation of classroom materials, presenting grammar and classroom management to name but a few.
At our school, there are currently around 20 teachers; some from China some from the UK, Canada, the US and South Africa.
A typical working week:
Monday and Tuesday off
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – afternoon planning and evening classes
Saturday and Sunday – classes 9am to 5pm
The contractual maximum is 40 hour working week, of which a maximum of 20 can be teaching hours.
About the City
Jiaxing is located in the Eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang and is within easy access of some of China’s most famous sites and scenery. It is situated within 100 km of the cities of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou, all well connected with Jiaxing by both buses and trains.
Shanghai, the powerhouse of China’s economic Development, is a cosmopolitan, modern metropolis offering a mixture of spectacular skyscrapers and colonial architecture and is easily accessible for both its world class shopping and vibrant nightlife.
The cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou, jointly known as “Paradise on Earth” are also within an hour’s travel from Jiaxing. Hangzhou, former capital of the Song Dynasty, was Called by Marco Polo ‘the most beautiful and magnificent City on Earth’ and is still regarded as the most beautiful city in China. It is justifiably famous for its views of West LSurrounded by tea-cultivating mountains; while the ancient mooted city of Suzhou is famous for its gardens, silk and beautiful women.
From Jiaxing it is also easily possible to visit some of China’s most spectacular natural scenery; From the idyllic holy Buddhist island of Putuo Shan, to the awesome cloud-draped peaks of Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains), as well as miles of unspoilt coastline along the East China Sea.
